The Mortal Kombat II Trailer Is Here, Watch It Now

Mortal Kombat II - Warner Bros.

Fight! Warner Bros. and New Line have revealed the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II. The sequel was first announced in 2022, with Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater tackling the script. This serves as a follow-up to 2021’s Mortal Kombat, which brought the beloved video games to life on the big screen for a new generation. This time around though, Johnny Cage has entered the battle. Check it out for yourself.

This looks like a bigger movie and one that is more faithful to the games. The first one didn’t include the actual tournament. This time though, that’s the whole thing. We also get to see Karl Urban (Thor: Ragnarok) taking on the role of actor-turned-fighter Johnny Cage. There are tons of blood, corny lines from the game and even fatalities. This looks like a movie made to satisfy fans. Rather curiously, Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, who was the lead of the first movie, is nowhere to be found. We’ll have to wait and see how he factors in when the sequel hits theaters this fall.

Here is the synopsis for Mortal Kombat II.

“This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”

The cast also includes  Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Damon Herriman (Quan Chi) and Chin Han (Shang Tsung) round out the ensemble.

It’s been a busy few years for the Mortal Kombat franchise. Aside from the live-action movies, Mortal Kombat 1 was released in 2023, ushering in a new era for the games. We’ve also had several animated movies in recent years as part of the Mortal Kombat Legends series. These include Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.

Simon McQuoid to the director’s chair. The movie is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and McQuoid. Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater and Lawrence Kasanoff are on board as executive producers.

Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on October 22.
