Heads up, Witcher fans! Netflix has released the first trailer for The Witcher: Blood Origin. This is the first live-action spin-off in the franchise that will expand the scope of this universe on the streaming service. It won’t bring back Henry Cavill as Geralt, however. But it will bring us a new cast of characters centuries before the events of the main show. Check it out.
The Witcher: Blood Origin Trailer
As we can see, this is very much just a teaser. We are likely to get something more significant in the coming months. Netflix hasn’t yet set an official release date, but it is due to arrive next year. The show is being billed as a six-part limited series. So this is shaping up to be a one-and-done thing. But it almost certainly won’t be the end of the company’s attempts to expand the franchise.
Here is the synopsis for The Witcher: Blood Origin.
“Every story has a beginning. Witness the untold history of the Continent with The Witcher: Blood Origin, a new prequel series set in an elven world 1200 years before the events of The Witcher. Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time – exploring the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “Conjunction of the Spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one. “
The Witcher, which is based on the novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski, proved to be a gigantic hit for Netflix. As such, they quickly moved to expand the franchise. That kicked off with The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an animated feature released earlier this year. More recently, The Witcher season 2 hit the streaming service after being delayed by the pandemic. Now, fans have an entirely new show to look forward to.
The cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Scían, Sophia Brown as Éile and Laurence O’Fuarain as Fjall. Declan de Barra is on board as the executive producer and showrunner of the series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who is showrunner of The Witcher, is also on board as an executive producer. Sapkowski is a creative consultant on the show. Jason Brown, Sean Daniel, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko are also set as executive producers.
The Witcher: Blood Origin arrives on Netflix in 2022.
