Netflix is reuniting with Robert Rodriguez. The streaming service has entered development on a We Can Be Heroes sequel. The original film debuted on Netflix in December, with Rodriguez behind the camera. The movie proved to be a big success during the holiday frame, which prompted the sequel announcement.

According to Netflix, We Can Be Heroes was streamed by 44 million households in its first four weeks of release. Rodriguez also shared the news, confirming that he is developing the sequel currently.

“44 MILLION FAMILIES will have suited up for WE CAN BE HEROES in its first 4 weeks!!  And… BREAKING NEWS: The Heroics are coming back for round two! I’m in full development of the sequel with Netflix,” Rodriguez said.

Here is the synopsis for We Can Be Heroes

“When alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, their children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.”

There is no word on how involved the Sin City director will be. The project was his baby in many ways and featured appearances from Sharkboy and Lava Girl, who had appeared in his 2005 movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl. Whether or not the filmmaker will return to direct or pass the baton to another filmmaker remains to be seen. Rodriguez is currently busy with the Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett for Disney+ following his work on The Mandalorian season 2.

The cast for the first movie includes Christian Slater (Mr. Robot, The Wife), YaYa Gosselin (FBI Most Wanted, The Purge), Akira Akbar (Captain Marvel, This is Us), Andrew Diaz, Andy Walken (The Kids are Alright, A Christmas Story LIve!), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Hala Finley (Man with a Plan, Backroads) Isaiah Russell-Bailey (Family Reunion, SWAT), Lotus Blossom (Magic Max), Lyon Daniels (Patriot), Nathan Blair (Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever.), Sung Kang (Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift, Better Luck Tomorrow),Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box, Waco), Adriana Barraza (Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Babel, Cake, Penny Dreadful) and Christopher McDonald (Mr. Iglesias, Wetlands) with Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Wonder Woman 1984) and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas (Isn’t It Romantic, Baywatch).

It is not clear at this time what cast members will be returning for the sequel. There is also no indication as to how soon production will begin. Though outside factors related to the pandemic will have a large bearing on that.
