“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… Aug 11 2023 (Leo takes notes like I used to)” Rogen said.
Nickelodeon Animation partnered with Rogen and his Point Grey Pictures production company last year on the film. The movie, which appears to simply be titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will be produced by Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs the Machines) is on board to direct. Brendan O’Brien (Neighbors) penned the screenplay.
Rogen and Goldberg have partnered on many successful comedies including Superbad, This is the End and Sausage Party. While Rogen is known for his work in front of the camera he has increasingly been taking on roles behind the scenes in recent years. Now, he’ll have a hand in rebooting this beloved franchise for the big screen once again.
“Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property,” said Brian Robbins, president, Kids & Family Entertainment of ViacomCBS when the project was announced last June. “I’m looking forward to see what they do, and I know that Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio in another great direction with their first-ever CG-animated theatrical.”
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird co-created Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a comic in 1984. It has since become a massive multi-media franchise. It spans TV shows, movies, comic books, video games, toys and more. To date, the films have earned more than $1.1 billion at the global box office. The last animated feature released theatrically was 2007’s TMNT. It earned a respectable $96 million.
More recently, a pair of live-action entries produced by Michael Bay were released. 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 2016’s sequel, titled Out of the Shadows. While the first entry was quite successful, the follow-up saw a significant drop-off in ticket sales. The franchise has been stagnant on the film side ever since. Though Nickelodeon has had quite a bit of luck on the small screen with it.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie hits theaters on August 11, 2023.
