Looks like James Gunn and Warner Bros. have made up their mind on who would play the gender-swapped Ratcatcher in The Suicide Squad.
In the pages of DC Comics, the Batman-nemesis Ratcatcher is a male character whose real name is Otis Flannegan. But we've known for a while that the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, which has Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn at its helm, will introduce a female version of the supervillain. Now, Variety is reporting that Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior has been tapped for the role.
Melchior is a newcomer in Hollywood, with the DC project being her first major studio role. However, she is quite a familiar name in the Portuguese entertainment industry. Her notable works in Portugal include big-screen ventures Parque Mayer and O Caderno Negro. She has also appeared in small-screen ventures like Mulheres, Ouro Verde, A Herdeira and Valor da Vida.
According to a recent GWW report, Daniela Melchior wasn't Gunn's only choice to play The Suicide Squad's Ratcatcher. Transformers: The Last Knight star Isabela Moner was also in his shortlist. There were a few other contenders whose identities haven’t been revealed.
Ratcatcher is the fourth new member of Gunn's Task Force X to have found its portrayer. The other three are David Dastmalchian's Polka-Dot Man, John Cena's Peacemaker, and an undisclosed character portrayed by Idris Elba (widely speculated to be Bronze Tiger). We are almost sure that King Shark is another new supervillain that will join the team. Also, there's a rumor about Killer Frost being introduced.
In the GWW report, the Ratcatcher we will see in the August 6, 2020 release is being described as Latina, an idealist, an innocent, a complainer, a warrior for goodness, and a lazy millennial all wrapped into one. Meanwhile, Variety confirms that the character will have some connection to the one Elba is playing in the movie.
Among the characters from David Ayer's original movie, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang is certain to show up in the sequel as the actor himself has confirmed that. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis's Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag are also expected to return.
