The Suicide Squad Adds John Cena; Dave Bautista Not Appearing!

John Cena has landed a role in The Suicide Squad, but his character will probably not have invisibility as a superpower.

Multiple Hollywood trades, including Variety, are reporting that John Cena has entered negotiations to join Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis in James Gunn’s first DC project, The Suicide Squad. Elba, who was originally set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, is now expected to play a different character (heavily speculated to be Bronze Tiger). Meanwhile, Robbie, Courtney and Davis are reprising their roles of Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang and Amanda Waller from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Joel Kinnaman too is rumored to return as Rick Flag in the August 6, 2021 release.

Justin Kroll, who wrote the Variety piece, has taken it to Twitter to share some additional information concerning the wrestler-cum-actor’s casting in the upcoming DC movie. According to the reporter, Cena was not the first guy Gunn had in mind for the role. The Bumblebee star’s former WWE colleague Dave Bautista, with whom Gunn worked in the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, was the original choice. However, due to his busy schedule, Bautista had to pass on the role, leading the director to go for Cena.

In his tweet, Kroll speculates that Cena would be playing Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. But he cautions that he couldn’t confirm it from his sources. However, the speculation makes sense as it falls in line with a report from last month that pointed towards Bautista being in contention for the role. That report suggested that James Gunn’s Task Force X will include at least four characters that Ayer didn’t use: Ratcatcher (a gender-swapped version), King Shark, Mister Polka-Dot and Peacemaker. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Cena is being linked to a DC movie. He was a frontrunner for the titular role in Shazam!, as far as rumors are concerned. But somehow, things didn’t pan out for him that time as the studio eventually fixed on Zachary Levi for the role. Now that he has landed another role, Cena can probably stop fantasizing about hitting an Attitude Adjustment on Levi.
