It looks like DC Comics has a major hit on its hands. Scott Snyder is back at DC With Absolute Batman, a brand new series that takes place outside of the main DC Universe. Along with artist Nick Dragotta, they are reinventing The Dark Knight in a way that clearly has fans very excited. As evidence of that, Absolute Batman #1 has completely sold out at retailers all across the country after hitting shelves earlier this week.
According to Bleeding Cool, comic book stored across the country have already sold out of copies of Absolute Batman #1, which was released on Wednesday, October 9. That means at least 250,000 copies have been sold already. DC Comics had already announced a second printing of the issue due to fan demand. Whether or not that’s enough remains to be seen. Since Snyder is the man behind the much-beloved Batman: The Court of Owls storyline, it makes sense that fans are rallying behind this new book.
Here is the synopsis for Absolute Batman #1.
“Batman Legend Scott Snyder and Iconic Artist Nick Dragotta transform The Dark Knight’s tale for the modern age! Without the mansion…without the money…without the butler…what’s left is the Absolute Dark Knight!”
This all comes as DC is in the middle of its All In and Absolute initiatives. It’s all about trying to get new readers on board. The idea is making new comics that require no prior knowledge to understand. At times, having decades of continuity to keep up with can be a barrier for newer readers. The initiative also includes Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman. DC has done similar things in the past, including most famously the New 52 in 2011.
“Instead of starting with the gallery of characters and deciding which ones we want to bring in, I’m trying to really focus on Bruce and his story in this universe and let that dictate who shows up and how,” Snyder recently said of his new take on Batman in an AMA. “He’s a really different version of himself in Absolute. He’s both angrier and more idealistic, he’s young and wild, and he grew up in Crime Alley with some of the people who eventually become his villains in the main universe, so I sort of start from there and then think about what he would do, who he would know, who he would consider an ally or a friend, he would be suspicious of, and build out from there.”
