Paramount Pictures is moving forward with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. As reported by Variety, the studio and Sega have both confirmed that they are in development on the sequel. The video game adaptation was released in theaters back in February before the widespread movie theater shutdown with great success.
There is no word yet on the plot for the film. Direct Jeff Fowler will be returning. Actor James Marsden previously revealed that he had a deal in place for multiple movies. It’s expected that Ben Schwartz will return as the voice of Sonic as well.

“Round two with the blue,” Fowler said on Twitter.
Pat Casey and Josh Miller are set to pen the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are on board as producers, with Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Deadpool director Tim Miller on as executive producers.
There is no word yet on further casting for the sequel. It also hasn’t been revealed when production could begin. The project is in the early stages of development. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is likely a top priority for the studio as Paramount is short on reliable franchises. Plus, once the shutdown is over, studios will be more dependant on franchise fare that can put meat in seats than ever before.
During its theatrical release, Sonic the Hedgehog earned $306 million at the global box office. And that was with just over a month in release before most major theater chains in the U.S. closed down. Paramount later released the film as a premium VOD release. The movie was also received reasonably well by critics, earning a 64 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. More importantly, the audience rating sits at a stellar 93 percent.
Here is the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog.
“The world needed a hero, we got a hedgehog. Powered with incredible speed, Sonic The Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz), aka The Blue Blur, embraces his new home on Earth. That is, until he accidentally knocks out the power grid and sparks the attention of super-uncool evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Now it’s super-villain vs. super-sonic in an all-out race across the globe to stop Robotnik from using Sonic’s unique power for world domination. Sonic teams up with The Donut Lord, aka Sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to save the planet in this live-action adventure comedy that’s fun for the whole family.”
