After years of waiting. Weapon X is finally getting to take the spotlight in his very own video game. Marvel’s Wolverine was hit with several setbacks along the way. But now, at long last, Insomniac’s latest video game is just weeks away from hitting shelves. While it does take place in the world occupied by the X-Men, the game itself doesn’t include the X-Men as a team. But why is that? 

 

In a recent interview with IGN, the game’s director Walt Williams addressed the X-Men of it all head-on. As he explained it, the idea is to explore mutants in a world that doesn’t appreciate them. Whereas Insomniac’s Spider-Man games were rather heroic in the more traditional sense, this game is not. Here’s what he had to say about it. 

 

“We wanted to bring players back to that mindset of that these are characters who exist on the outside. They are not superheroes. They don’t have a safe space. They are people who are living in shadow. They are people who are hiding their powers from the world because they are afraid of what would happen if people would discover them. And so if we had started this story with the X-Men in existence, there would already be that aspect of a safe place for them. And we wanted to remind people that existence for a mutant is not safe. It’s hard. It’s scary. And entering that world through Logan, it really felt like the best POV possible.” 

 

So there we have it. This is more about showing Logan navigating a world that doesn’t care for mutants. As we’ve seen in the trailer’s for Wolverine, it’s going to be a very violent game. Unbothered by a need to keep himself in check as part of Charles Xavier’s team, this is going to show a darker side of the character. One who is part of a different team; Team X. 

 

“Team X is canonical,” Williams added. “It is Logan’s first team in his history. It was a black ops team from the ’70s made up of wetworks mutant workers. So in telling Wolverine’s story, we wanted to bring it back to the beginning of where his story really began in that long string of teams. Because as we know, he’s been a member of many teams by this point in his 50-plus year history.” 

 

Here is the synopsis for Marvel’s Wolverine. 

 

“Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine, but the past wasn’t finished with him yet. Three years after walking out on his team, Wolverine rejoins the mutant task force, Team X, in their darkest hour. Driven by his fanatical belief in human superiority, Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants. Only Wolverine has what it takes to save them.   

 

In his fight for the future, Wolverine must team up with fellow mutants across the globe through locations like Canada, Japan, and the Marvel island nation of Madripoor. With the fate of humans and mutants hanging in the balance, Logan knows the world needs a hero; however, they’ll have to settle for Wolverine.” 

 

Marvel’s Wolverine arrives for the PlayStation 5 on September 15.
