It’s been an up-and-down ride for the new DC Universe so far. Superman was a big hit last year, and the animated Creature Commandos was well received. However, it looks like a couple of TV shows that were announced as part of the initial DC Studios lineup are no longer moving forward. This is another down in what has largely been a down year for DC and Warner Bros. thus far.
According to Entertainment Weekly, both Paradise Lost and Waller have been put on the back burner at DC Studios. The report notes that Waller is no longer in active development. The show was supposed to see Viola Davis return as Amanda Waller from Suicide Squad. As for Paradise Lost, which takes place within the Wonder Woman franchise, it “could still see the light of day in the future” but is currently taking a backseat. In short, don’t expect to see either of these shows any time soon, if at all.
“Paradise Lost is a story of Paradise Island, usually known as Themyscira which is the birthplace of Wonder Woman,” DC Studios co-head James Gunn explained when the show was first announced. “It’s almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with all of the inhabitants of Paradise Island.”
“We’re working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola [Davis] get her Waller outfits on, with her s**ty floral dresses and do something special,” Gunn said of Waller last year at the premiere event for Peacemaker season 2 (via Bleeding Cool).
This news comes after Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, greatly disappointed at the box office. The movie made less than $130 million worldwide on a $170 million budget. Warner Bros. is also in the middle of a messy acquisition, with Paramount trying to buy the studio. That’s held up, and the new regime will probably have its own ideas of what to do with the new DC Universe.
Next up is Lanterns, the live-action Green Lantern series. It premieres on HBO Max on Sunday. After that, we’ve got the R-rated Clayface movie in theaters in October. Next summer will see the release of Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. Beyond that though, things seem less certain. Aside from Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which doesn’t take place in the new DCU continuity, no other live-action DC movies have currently been given the green light. We’ll see how things shake out in the coming months.
Waller and Paradise Lost remain without release dates.
