Marvel’s Wolverine video game is just around the corner after literally years of waiting. Insomniac’s Wolverine game was first announced way back in 2021. It was announced at the same time as Spider-Man 2, which came out in 2023. It’s been a long wait. Will the wait be worth it? That remains to be seen but this could be the building block to something bigger. Namely a big Marvel crossover. Though expectations do need to be managed.
In an interview with IGN, Marcus Smith, creative director of Marvel’s Wolverine, spoke about the game after a big reveal during Sony’s State of Play. Smith confirmed that yes, this new game takes place in the same universe as 2018’s Spider-Man game and its sequels. Just don’t expect to see the webslinger crossing paths with Logan…yet. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“It’s correct that it does take place in the 1048 Marvel Universe, which is the Insomniac video game universe. It happens in the same world, but we don’t have any crossover. Spider-Man will not be making an appearance in Wolverine.”
Spider-Man and Wolverine have crossed paths in the world of Marvel Comics plenty of times. They’ve also been in video games together plenty of times. They were both prominent in Marvel’s Midnight Suns not too long ago. Based on what Smith is saying here, a crossover is possible down the line, in theory. For now though, Wolverine is going to stand on its own. What the future will hold? That’s another question entirely.
Here is the synopsis for Marvel’s Wolverine.
“Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine, but the past wasn’t finished with him yet. Three years after walking out on his team, Wolverine rejoins the mutant task force, Team X, in their darkest hour.
Driven by his fanatical belief in human superiority, Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants. Only Wolverine has what it takes to save them.
In his fight for the future, Wolverine must team up with fellow mutants across the globe through locations like Canada, Japan, and the Marvel island nation of Madripoor. With the fate of humans and mutants hanging in the balance, Logan knows the world needs a hero; however, they’ll have to settle for Wolverine.”
The Wolverine game has been hit with several setbacks along the way. There was some concern for a while that it might not ever see the light of day. The unfortunate reality is that many games are announced only to be canceled down the line. EA canceled a Black Panther game relatively recently. Fortunately, all is well and the fan-favorite mutant will be taking the spotlight on a PlayStation near you this fall.
Marvel’s Wolverine arrives for the PlayStation 5 on September 15.
