The teaser does a good job of setting up this universe. It is chaotic, apocalyptic and brutal. The first season will consist of ten episodes. Though, at this stage, it’s hard to know how much of the original comic that first season will tackle.
Y: The Last Man was originally published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. Written by Brian K. Vaughn with art by Pig Guerra, the book ran for 60 issues. It was widely acclaimed, receiving three Eisner Awards. It was, additionally, nominated for the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
Here’s the synopsis for Y: The Last Man.
“A drama based on DC Comics’ acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.”
Development on this iteration of the show dates back to 2015. It has gone through different showrunners and suffered delays. In short, this project did not have an easy road to traverse. Against the odds, FX managed to make it happen. Now it’s just a matter of finding out whether or not it was worth the wait.
The cast includes Diane Lane as Jennifer Brown, Ashley Romans as Agent 355, Ben Schnetzer as Yorick Brown, Olivia Thirlby as Hero Brown, Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham Campbell, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, Diana Bang as Dr. Allison Mann, Elliot Fletcher as Sam Jordan, Juliana Canfield as Beth Deville and Missi Pyle as Roxanne.
Every episode of the show’s first season was directed by a woman. FX also notes that the production has a “significant number of female department heads.” This includes both DPs, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator and more.
Eliza Clark serves as showrunner and executive producer of the series. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also on board as executive producers alongside Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Nellie Reed serves as Producer.
Y: The Last Man premieres on September 13.
