Today brings a new trailer that is relevant to both Marvel and DC fans. First premiered by Deadline, Roku has released the first trailer for the upcoming series Slugfest. The docuseries is based on the book of the same name, covering the rivalry between the two companies. The rivalry in question spans decades. The show is set to tackle some noteworthy events from said rivalry. Have a look.

Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats) narrates the series, which was originally set up at Quibi. The short-form streaming service launched last year and flamed out in a hurry. That left its full slate of shows up for grabs, with Roku stepping in to take them. Now, Slugfest is finally going to be streaming in time for Christmas as a result. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are on board as producers. Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce are directors in addition to serving as producers. Todd Makurath, Peter Rieveschl, Nick Gilhool and Jen Casey are also on board as producers.

Here is the synopsis for Slugfest.

“Our newest Roku Original, ‘Slugfest,’ executive produced by industry icons Joseph Russo and Anthony Russo, explores how the decades-long relationship and rivalry between creative powerhouses Marvel and DC Comics pushed both companies to innovate and develop the stories that continue to captivate millions of fans around the world today.”

The Russo Brothers had this to say.

“Audiences will leave Slugfest with a whole new of understanding of how the rivalry between two creative powerhouses shaped the iconic storylines and characters that fans around the world have come to know and love. We’re thrilled to partner with The Roku Channel to unpack the fascinating, but untold, history behind the most well-known competition in comics.”

Roku’s Head of Alternative Originals, Brian Tannenbaum, had this to say.

“After watching Slugfest, even the most die-hard superhero fans will gain a newfound perspective on how one competitive relationship shaped fandom culture into what it is today. Collaborating with the Russo Brothers to tell the backstory behind one of the most epic creative battles in the history of Hollywood was an incredible experience and we can’t wait to share this story with audiences on The Roku Channel.”

Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-year Battle Between Marvel and DC, was originally published in 2017. Written by Reed Tucker, it documented the rivalry from its earliest days, right up through the modern era. The show will utilize re-enactments and interviews to re-create some of the big moments. The book was met with rave reviews.

Slugfest is set to premiere on The Roku Channel on December 24.
