The recent PlayStation Showcase brought a lot to the table. Especially on the Marvel side of things. There were two very big surprises though. For one, we are getting a Wolverine game, which came completely out of left field. Another, slightly less surprising reveal, is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which got a teaser trailer. But there were some big surprises along with that somewhat expected news.
Starting with Marvel’s Wolverine, the game comes from Insomniac, the same studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man. So it would appear to be in good hands. Little to no information was revealed beyond the presentation itself. We were treated to a brief teaser trailer though. Have a look.
As we can see, Logan is sitting at a seedy bar. Some shenanigans start kicking up and he decides to pop the claws. That’s about it. We didn’t see any gameplay and no story details have been revealed at this time. It also isn’t clear precisely when the game will be released. But, most importantly, it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. This is a particularly brutal bit of information for Xbox owners.
With Spider-Man, the notion of those games being exclusive to PlayStation makes sense. Sony still owns the rights to the character. Sony has no motivation to let Microsoft or Nintendo get in on the action. They get a big, flashy exclusive out of it. Wolverine, however, is controlled by Disney and Marvel. Given the popularity of the character, it might make sense to bring that game to all platforms. But, somehow (likely money), Sony managed to get a big win over the competition here.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Speaking of Spidey, we also got our first taste of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The teaser sees Miles Morales and Peter Parker working together to tackle crime in New York City. However, things get dark in a hurry. We hear voiceover from a villain. Many believe it is Kraven the Hunter. But another iconic villain pops up at the end of the trailer in the form of Venom. The character will be voiced by the legendary Tony Todd (Candyman).
The bad news here is that the game won’t be hitting shelves until 2023. That means fans have a long time to wait. Though that also, potentially, opens the door for Marvel’s Wolverine to slide into 2022. Though that is purely speculation for the time being.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives in 2023. Marvel’s Wolverine will be release at a date TBD.
