Spider-Woman Is Getting Her Own Series at Marvel

Spider-Woman is finally getting her own ongoing series in the pages of Marvel Comics. The publisher recently announced that the hero also known as Jessica Drew will be getting her very own comic book series in 2020. Karla Pacheco (PUNISHER ANNUAL, FANTASTIC FOUR 2099) and Pere Perez (UNCANNY X-MEN) have been tasked with bringing the character’s new book to life.

“I love Spider-Woman, and I’m incredibly excited to share this series with both new and old Jessica Drew fans alike. This is big, can’t-miss, over-the-top action, some very surprising ‘venom blasts from the pasts,’ and also a TON of helicopter explosions,” Pacheco says. “It’s a super fun adventure with a lot of twists and turns… and seriously, so many helicopter explosions. We’re taking Jess bigger and badder than she’s ever been before, and I can’t wait for readers to see what we’ve cooked up.”

Here’s the synopsis for Spider-Woman #1

“Looking for fresh thrills, Spider-Woman takes on a job that puts her in the crosshairs of an all-new enemy! She soon finds herself caught in a web of intrigue, surrounded by unknown forces bent on her destruction. With danger on all sides and her deadly past coming to haunt her, Spider-Woman is in for an action-packed ride, and she wouldn’t have it any other way!”

The character of Spider-Woman was first introduced in Marvel Spotlight #32 back in 1977. Jessica Drew, unlike Peter Parker, was the product of genetical enhancement at the hands of HYDRA, which gave her super-powers. She started life as an assassin before finding her way to the side of good, ultimately becoming a SHIELD agent. She was also a one-time member of the Avengers and an Agent of SWORD.

This also comes at a time when it seems Spider-Woman could be primed for a big screen debut. For one, Sony is still making other Spider-Man spin-off movies like Venom, and there have been unconfirmed rumors that Spider-Woman is on the table. It’s also quite possible that she could be brought into the mix in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, which is currently in the works. For now, we’ve got this new comic to look forward to.

Spider-Woman #1 arrives in March 2020.

So what do you think? Is now the right time for Jessica Drew to get a solo series? Are you going to pick this book up when it arrives next year? Join in on the conversation over on Facebook or Twitter
