It’s official: The Autobots and Decepticons are coming back to the big screen. Paramount Pictures has confirmed that a new Transformers movie is officially in the works. While details largely remain scarce, one of the biggest franchises around is coming back for another installment. Fans, for the time being, are left with a host of questions.
The news came as part of Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas. As reported by Deadline, the studio confirmed that a new Transformers movie is coming soon. Unfortunately, no further details were provided.
Most recently, the animated Transformers One hit theaters in 2024. Despite earning very positive reviews, it didn’t deliver at the box office. Paramount decided not to move forward with a sequel. The most recent live-action entry in the franchise came in 2023 in the form of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It brought characters from Beast Wars into the fold, taking place in the ‘90s.
It also disappointed at the box office, taking in $439 million worldwide. It’s the lowest-grossing live-action movie in the series to date. Even so, Paramount announced a Transformers/G.I. Joe movie, with Chris Hemsworth (Thor) attached to star. Details on that have been few and far between since the original news came to light.
Rumors have swirled more recently that Michael Bay is in talks to return to the franchise. Bay directed five Transformers movies beginning in 2007. However, by the time The Last Knight came out in 2017, the series was running out of gas critically and commercially. To date, the movies have collectively made more than $5.34 billion at the box office.
“At Paramount, we’ve already demonstrated – since launching the new company just eight months ago – our ability to increase output with 15 films currently dated for 2026, up from eight in 2025,” studio head David Ellison said, according to Variety. “We want to tell even more great stories on the big screen – stories that make people think, laugh, dream, wonder and feel – and we want to share them with as broad an audience as possible.”
This particular franchise has been thriving elsewhere. The Energon universe in the comics has been performing very well. An animated Transformers/G.I. Joe TV show based on those comics is currently in the works. If Paramount can get the right filmmaker with the right take, there’s reason to believe the franchise can thrive again in theaters.
The new Transformers movie doesn’t have a release date but stay tuned.
