Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 May Be Coming in 2021

Those looking forward to a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man video game are in luck, as one is not only on the way, but it may be coming a little sooner than we think. Video games take years to develop, so sometimes it can be years and years between installments. Grand Theft Auto 5, for example, came out in 2013 and we have no word on when we can expect GTA6. However, we now have possible confirmation that Spider-Man 2 could be coming our way in 2021.

On a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, former Game Informer Senior Editor Imran Khan popped on the show to share some possible Spider-Man 2 details. According to Khan, who wouldn’t reveal his sources, the game will be coming as early as 2021. While a specific date wasn’t revealed, Khan expects that this could be Sony’s big holiday release for 2021, which would make a great deal of sense.

The timing would be quite ideal for a few reasons. For one, the PlayStation 5 is expected to hit stores in December 2020. That means the company’s latest, next-gen console will have been on shelves for several months, meaning that there will be a solid market for the game. Not only that, but the Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel, which doesn’t yet have an official title, is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2021. While the game won’t tie into that film, as far as we know, Spidey will be in the  public consciousness in a big way.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games, was one of the best-reviewed games of 2018 and went on to become a huge hit. To date, the game has sold more than 13 million copies. As such, a sequel became an inevitability rather quickly. One of the big questions is whether or not this will be an exclusive PS5 title, or if PS4 owners will also be able to play it. We’re in the earliest days of the next-gen console wars and it’s hard to know how big games like this will be handled. Specifically, for how long Sony and Microsoft will make titles for both the current and next generation systems.

Here’s the official synopsis for Marvel’s Spider-Man.

“When a new villain threatens New York City, Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s worlds collide. To save the city and those he loves, he must rise up and be greater. Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games, and Marvel have teamed up to create a brand-new and authentic Spider-Man adventure. This isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve met or ever seen before. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.”
