New Peacemaker Trailer Officially Released

HBO Max has given us a little treat for the new year. The streaming service has released a brand new trailer for the Peacemaker series, which debuts next week. The show will see John Cena returning to the role, with James Gunn once again behind the camera. It should be cautioned, this is a red band trailer and is most definitely not safe for work. You’ve been arned. Have a look.

This is, first and foremost, very much in the same R-rated tone as The Suicide Squad. The movie, released last summer, introduced us to Cena’s character. He was part of the new Task Force X lineup and, since he lived, he got a spin-off. This trailer is also a bit more revealing than the ones we’ve seen previously. Then again, who knows what surprises Gunn and the filmmakers could be hiding. One assumes there will be plenty.

Here is the logline for Peacemaker.

“PEACEMAKER will explore the origins of the character that John Cena first portrayed in James Gunn’s 2021 film, “The Suicide Squad” – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”

The cast also includes Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Steve Agee as Economos, Chukwudi Iwuji as Murn and Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith. Gunn directed five of the eight episodes in the show’s first season. Assuming HBO Max wants more, Gunn has revealed that he would like to do a second season. It may be a while though, as he is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios.

This is one of many DC projects in the works for HBO Max. Some others include the Batgirl movie, a Black Canary movie, Static Shock, and several Justice League Dark projects from J.J. Abrams. Michael B. Jordan is also producing a Superman show for the streaming service. Meanwhile, Abrams is also producing a new Superman movie.

The Suicide Squad was released last year to rave reviews. However, it failed to do much business at the box office, making only a fraction of what 2016’s Suicide Squad made. This, despite the fact that Gunn’s movie was received far better. Despite that, Peacemaker presses on, and Gunn has teased he may have more DC shows in the works.

Gunn, Peter Safran and Matt Miller serve as executive producers on the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.

Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max on January 13.
