New Kraven The Hunter Trailer Brings R-Rated Rhino Action

Kraven the Hunter - Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures has released a brand new trailer for Kraven the Hunter. The upcoming film is based on the Spider-Man villain of the same name from the pages of Marvel Comics. It’s in line with what Sony has done with other spin-off films such as Venom and Morbius. The difference this time is that they’re leaning into a hard R rating. Not only that, but Kraven isn’t the only Marvel villain along for the ride. Rhino and Chameleon are coming to the party as well. Check it out.

This is much more violent than the first teaser trailer for Kraven, which was released late last year. Sony has had to delay the film several times. It’s finally going to arrive in December, which means we’re about to get a meaningful marketing push. That means revealing the Rhino in all of his CGI glory. This is the first time we’ve seen the character in live-action since The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That difference here is that the character will be a CGI creation, more like an animal. Previously, Paul Giamatti played a version in a robotic suit. This appears to be a little closer to the comics.

Here is the synopsis for Kraven the Hunter.

“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.”

Sony has a big rest of the year as far as the studio’s Marvel output goes. The Studio is also releasing Venom: The Last Dance in October. It’s expected to be the end of Tom Hardy’s time as the character. Given the failure of Madame Web earlier this year, it’s hard to know where they’re going to go with these Spider-Man spin-off films in the future. Much of that could depend on how well this one does in theaters.

J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier) directed the film, working from a screenplay by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer), Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man). The cast is led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train, Kick-Ass) as the titular Kraven. The ensemble also includes Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), Alessandro Nivola (Jurassic Park III), Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) and Russell Crowe (Thor: Love and Thunder).

Kraven the Hunter hits theaters on December 13.
