Mortal Kombat 2 Officially Begins Filming This Summer

Warner Bros. is finally getting ready to roll cameras on Mortal Kombat 2. According to a new report from That Hashtag Show, the upcoming sequel is set to begin filming in June in Australia. This news was later confirmed by producer Todd Garner on social media. But that’s not all! The report brings word that several new characters will be getting in on the action this time around. And yes, new villains are on the way.

According to the report, Shao Kahn, Baraka and Kitana will all make their debut in the sequel. There is no word yet on who is being eyed to play any of those roles. Casting is said to be underway. Additionally, Quan Chi, as well as ing Jerrod and Queen Sindel will also be joining the ensemble. Again, no actors are attached at this time. Simon McQuoid is returning to direct the sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation, with Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) penning the screenplay

Here is the synopsis for 2021’s Mortal Kombat.

“MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.

Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

The cast for the first film includes Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee (The Meg) as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson (Bombshell) as Kano, Tadanobu Asano (Midway) as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl) as Jax Briggs, Ludi Lin (Aquaman) as Liu Kang, Chin Han (Skyscraper) as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim (Star Trek Beyond) as Sub-Zero and Hiroyuki Sanada (Skyscraper) as Scorpion. It has not yet been confirmed who will return for Mortal Kombat 2. The film also does not have an official title yet. Though the first film did tease the arrival of Johnny Cage, who has yet to be cast.

Mortal Kombat 2 does not yet have a release date.
