Another new Marvel Cinematic Universe show is in development for Disney+. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Wonder Man series is in the works that could begin filming as early as next year. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is on board to executive produce to the show. Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community) has been tapped to serve as the head writer.
No word yet on plot details but the show will presumably center on Simon Williams. The character initially debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1964. He first showed up in Avengers but later became a founder member of the West Coast Avengers. He also has been the subject of several solo series over the years. Wonder Man has never made it to live-action before, so this would be a first.
While the early version of the character was a villain, it seems unlikely that will be the case here. Williams was actually something of a celebrity for his work as a Hollywood stuntman in the comics. That could provide fertile ground for a new type of story within the MCU. There is no word on casting at this time.
This is one of many shows currently being developed for Disney+ set within the MCU. Marvel Studios started this experiment last year with WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and Hawkeye. It has gone well and the studio is doubling down on that front. Aside from Ms.Marvel, which recently debuted, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Ironheart and Armor Wars are also at various stages of development. Loki season 2 is also in the works, as is a Black Panther spin-off show.
Meanwhile, Cretton is staying busy within the Disney ranks. He signed an overall deal with the company and, as part of that, is developing Shang-Chi 2. It’s expected he’ll remain on board as director of that film. He is also likely to direct at least one episode of Wonder Man, should the series move forward.
The Wonder Man show does not yet have a release date.
