Daredevil Rights Returning to Marvel Later This Year

Marvel Studios will soon be able to use Daredevil again. The show was canceled by Netflix in November 2018 after the release of season 3. At the time, it was reported that Disney/Marvel couldn’t use the character for two years following the cancellation. As revealed by Save Daredevil on Instagram, we are now six months away from that benchmark.

“Happy #FandomWithoutFear Friday! 18 months have passed since #Daredevil was cancelled which also means 18 months since we launched the #SaveDaredevil campaign!

We knew we’d be in this for the long haul but every day we’re inspired by #MattMurdock and Daredevil fans all over the world who are in this fight with us! We look forward to the next 6 months passing quickly toward the end of the 2 year moratorium with Netflix and with your help #WeWillSaveDaredevil,” the post reads.

This leads to questions about what might happen when November comes. At that point, Marvel Studios will have a few options. They could bring back the cast from the show, including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock. That could take the form of a series revival. Or, on the flipside, we could get a Daredevil Movie. To that point, Marvel could also opt to recast the role and reboot the franchise within the MCU.

Given how popular the show was, that would seem like a controversial option. Though it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The Netflix Marvel shows were, at best, only tangentially tied to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since none of the characters ever showed up in the films, it would be reasonably easy for the studio to reboot, if they so choose. For what it’s worth, Cox, Deborah Ann Woll and Vincent D’Onofrio have all expressed a desire to return, provided the chance.

“I think the likelihood is, I think you’ll definitely see Daredevil again,” Cox said in a recent interview with Comicbook.com. “I just think the best bet for them, in the unlikely nature of being able to get all of us together again, it should be a whole new team, and, you know, start again.”

Here is the official synopsis for Daredevil season 3.

“Missing for months, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reemerges a broken man, putting into question his future as both vigilante Daredevil and lawyer Matthew Murdock. But when his archenemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is released from prison, Matt must choose between hiding from the world, or embracing his destiny as a hero.”
