The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad Might Be Next

The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad could be next for DC Fans. Recently, it was revealed that Warner Bros. will release Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max next year. This came after fans called on the studio to “release the Snyder Cut” unrelentingly for more than two years. Now, David Ayer is on board for doing something similar with Suicide Squad.

Taking to Twitter, in response to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, the filmmaker explained that the Ayer Cut, as it were, would be easy to complete. Unlike Snyder’s Justice Leauge, it wouldn’t cost Warner Bros. millions to accomplish.

“This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen,” Ayer said.

Suicide Squad was met with a critical lashing upon release in 2016. Ayer and the studio are said to have clashed in the editing room. The version that was released was not what the director had in mind. Speaking further, Ayer revealed one battler he did win.

“It was the only battle I won. Decision makers were allergic to Diablo killing his family. Look at my films – death, guilt, redemption and emancipation from toxic relationships are themes I explore as a filmmaker. The human soul is beautiful and complex,” Ayer said.

Another detail Ayer touched on was Enchantress. Responding to a fan, the filmmaker detailed a sequence that got cut.

“Enchantress takes her over with a tendril and she attacks the rest of the Squad,” Ayer said.

Lastly, a fan asked Ayer if there are things he would change about Suicide Squad now, given the chance.

“Of course. My cut isn’t the apotheosis of filmmaking. It’s simply better than what the public has seen – and yes it would make sense to update it,” Ayer said.

Here is the official synopsis for Suicide Squad.

“It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?”
