Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Has Wrapped Filming

That’s a wrap on Sonic the Hedgehog 2. According to a recent post on Twitter from director Jeff Fowler, the sequel has finished filming. This is impressive as it not only had to film under pandemic conditions, but they got the whole thing in the can in about two months. That’s not all that long, in blockbuster terms.

“That’s a wrap in Vancouver! Thank you to all the amazing cast/crew in this city… so much incredible talent helping make #SonicMovie2 truly special (and spoiler alert… EPIC! )” Fowler said on Twitter.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will now shift to post-production. Ben Schwartz, who is returning to voice Sonic, congratulated the team on the milestone. He also revealed they will be getting in the recording booth soon to begin recording his lines.

“CONGRATS @FOWLTOWN AND THE SONIC CREW!!! And now we record V.O. #SonicMovie2,” Schwartz said.

Here is the synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog.

“The world needed a hero, we got a hedgehog. Powered with incredible speed, Sonic The Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz), aka The Blue Blur, embraces his new home on Earth. That is, until he accidentally knocks out the power grid and sparks the attention of super-uncool evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Now it’s super-villain vs. super-sonic in an all-out race across the globe to stop Robotnik from using Sonic’s unique power for world domination. Sonic teams up with The Donut Lord, aka Sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to save the planet in this live-action adventure comedy that’s fun for the whole family.”

James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Jim Carrey are all expected to return in the sequel. Plot details are largely being kept secretive for now. However, Sonic’s pal Tails, as well as the character Knuckles, are set to appear this time around.

Sonic the Hedgehog was released earlier last year just weeks before the pandemic closed down movie theaters across the globe. Despite that, it became a bigger-than-expected hit for Paramount Pictures. The film, based on the Sega video games of the same name, grossed more than $300 million worldwide against favorable reviews. The sequel was put into development quickly as a result.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
