We’ve seen the first official teaser trailer for Sony Pictures' Venom, and the titular anti-hero is nowhere to be seen.
When the news broke that a trailer for Venom had been classified, we assumed that it would accompany Black Panther’s theatrical release after showing up online during the preceding week. Then Sony shocked us with yesterday’s announcement that the trailer would arrive today. The studio did follow through on that promise, but something about the trailer may not sit well with fans.
Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is front and center, and the Venom symbiote is seen, all bottled up in a heavy-duty container inside an armored vehicle. But there’s not a single glimpse of Eddie's alter-ego, who comes to life after he bonds with the symbiote.
Of course, it’s only been a couple of weeks since production wrapped for the R-rated Ruben Fleischer flick. The character requires heavy use of CGI effects over Hardy's motion capture performance, and that process requires a great deal of time. So, we really didn't expect to see much of Venom in this trailer, but not seeing the character at all is a bit of a letdown.
Other than that, we can’t find much to complain about! The nearly two-minute trailer offers cool shots of Ann Weying (Michelle Williams), Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), and one unspecified character (Reid Scott). But this voice-over by Hardy might be the trailer’s most interesting moment:
Everyone's got their thing. Maybe it's a breakup, a death, an accident. Whatever it is, you used to be one thing. Now, you're something else. We all have our own problems, our own issues, our own demons.
Sony’s official teaser trailer and international trailer appear to be identical, but we’re sharing both to see if anyone can pick out any differences.
The studio also shared the first official poster for the October 5 release. Check it out here!
