Deadpool 3 is finally moving forward. According to a new report from Deadline, the sequel has taken a major step in the right direction. A pair of new writers, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, have been tapped to pen the screenplay. This means the Marvel Comics adaptation is in active development at Disney.
Ryan Reynolds is set to return once again as Wade Wilson. Deadpool 2 was released in 2018 and performed well both critically and financially. However, the Disney merger with Fox went into effect last year. That means the Marvel properties Fox controlled, which included the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, were in the hands of Disney. Meaning ultimately that they are creatively controlled by Marvel Studios.
There have been many questions regarding Deadpool 3 since the merger. The indication is that Disney is willing to keep the franchise R-rated, which was one of the biggest lingering questions. Interestingly, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned the previous two films with Reynolds, are not returning.
As for the Molyneux sisters, they are best known as writers and producers of the Fox animated series Bob’s Burgers. They are also behind the new series The Great North, which is set to debut in February 2021. The report notes that meetings have been taking place with writers over the last month. Ultimately, they won the gig.
The news was confirmed via the official Deadpool account over on Twitter.

Deadpool was released in 2016 and quickly became one of the most successful R-rated movies in history. The franchise, to date, has earned $1.57 billion at the global box office. As such, it makes sense for Disney to keep the train on the tracks. Even if an R-rated, meta superhero movie doesn’t fit in with the brand, or what they have going in the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently. It remains unclear how or if Reynolds’ character will be brought into the wider MCU, or if he will remain autonomous.
Tim Miller directed the first Deadpool, with David Leitch helming the sequel. There is no word yet on who will wind up in the director’s chair for Deadpool 3. It’s said that the door is open for Letich to return. However, his schedule is quite full and it’s not expected that will be the case. So there will likely be new blood at the helm as well.
Deadpool 3 does not yet have a release date set.
