It’s official: a new Wonder Woman movie is in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The news was confirmed by James Gunn, who serves as the co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Gunn is known best as the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy but now, he’s in charge of rebooting the DC Universe. While few details are available at the moment, one of DC’s biggest heroes is being woven into the fabric of this new universe.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly largely focused on Gunn’s new Superman movie, which hits theaters next month, he dropped a pretty big bombshell. Gunn revealed that a new Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now.” Unfortunately, he didn’t reveal who is writing the script. He also didn’t say anything regarding casting, or a potential timetable for release. For the moment, we have very little to go on.
What we know for sure is that Gal Gadot will very likely not be returning as Wonder Woman. She played the role in Batman v Superman before headline 2017’s Wonder Woman, which was directed by Patten Jenkins. It was a huge hit both critically and commercially. Following the disappointment of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. still planned to move forward with Wonder Woman 3.
However, after Gunn and Safran took over at DC Studios, Wonder Woman 3 was said to be canceled. That made sense, as the duo are fully rebooting the DCU. We have a new Superman played by David Corenswet. A new Batman will be cast in the coming years. A new Wonder Woman was only a matter of time.
It’s hard to say how soon this movie could come together. Next year will see the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as well as the Clayface movie. We also have the Lanterns TV show for HBO. When the new DC Universe slate was first announced, a Paradise Lost TV show centered on the Amazons of Themyscira was part of it. Gunn, in the same interview, confirmed that the show is slow moving, but it’s moving.”
It’s one thing to have a script, but whether or not this new Wonder Woman movie actually happens may depend on just how well movies like Superman and Supergirl do at the box office. WB and DC don’t seem to be biting off more than they can chew at once right now, but they also don’t want to be unprepared if things go well.
“I’m not one to talk about private career matters, but I will not allow inaccuracies to continue,” Jenkins previously said of the Wonder Woman 3 situation. “When there started being backlash about WW3 not happening, the attractive clickbait false story that it was me that killed it or walked away started to spread. This is simply not true. I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
The new Wonder Woman movie does not currently have a release date.
