Cameras have finally begun rolling on Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and we already have a teaser offering our first look at the major characters from the movie.
With its release set on next year's February 7, Birds of Prey was scheduled to kick off filming this month. Now, Warner Bros. has officially announced the commencement of production, and it has done that in style. The studio has dropped a teaser that doesn't run for more than 20 seconds but manages to show off all the big guns in the Cathy Yan flick.
As expected, Harley Quinn is at the front and center on the promotional video. We don't see Margot Robbie's character in the same Daddy's Lil Monster t-shirt that we saw her donning in Suicide Squad. But don't get your hopes high - she isn't garbed in the classic costume from the pages of DC Comics either.
Alongside the baseball-bat-wielding Harley, we have got the crossbow-wielding Huntress, portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Winstead's character bears significant amount of resemblance to her comic book counterpart, although the mask is missing. But it's possible that we'd see her putting on the mask before fighting bad guys in Birds of Prey.
However, the absence of mask would perhaps be a greater issue for the fans with Black Mask than with the Huntress. Ewan McGregor's character definitely looks like a mob boss, but it's just not the Roman Sionis that we are used to seeing in the comic books. Again, maybe there's going to be a mask for him in the theatrical cut of the movie.
Good news for the fans though is that Black Canary has her hair dyed blonde in the teaser. We don't get a detailed look at her full attire – it's unclear how much it resembles the ones from the source material. But a close-up shot does confirm that Jurnee Smollett-Bell's character is donning fishnet arm sleeves.
Based on what we see in the teaser, Ella Jay Basco's Cassandra Cain doesn't seem to be a well-liked youngster, while Rosie Perez's Renee Montoya appears to be another cop with a drinking problem. But Chris Messina's version of Victor Zsasz looks just as psychotic as one would expect the character to look. Check out the teaser!
