It looks like The Batman 2 is already well underway. While the sequel to last year’s DC blockbuster is still a long way off, Matt Reeves has confirmed that the script is currently in the works. He is writing the screenplay alongside Mattson Tomlin (Project Power). And, per his account, they are deep into the process already.
Reeves recently spoke with the folks at Collider. The filmmaker was promoting the 15th anniversary of Cloverfield, but took some time to talk about The Batman’s much-anticipated sequel. Without giving any story details, Reeves explained where they’re at in the process currently.
“I’m not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I’ll put it to you that way. We’re deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it’s really exciting, and I’m really excited about what we’re doing.”
Here is the synopsis for The Batman
“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.”
Robert Pattinson is going to be back as the Bruce Wayne/Batman in the follow-up. Plot details are fully under wraps for the time being. While there is no villain named, Barry Keoghan did appear briefly as Joker. One assumes he would have a larger role in the planned sequels. There is no word yet on how soon production could begin, but it seems likely it won’t actually get underway until much later this year. Though 2024 seems more likely meaning it probably wouldn’t hit theaters until 2025.
The cast for the first film also includes Zoe Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Catwoman, Paul Dano (Love & Mercy) as Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die) as Jim Gordon, John Turturro (Transformers) as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Reál, Andy Serkis (Black Panther) as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Penguin. While some of these characters didn’t survive to appear in the sequel, others will certainly be back. Farrell, for example, is starring in a Penguin series for HBO Max.
The Batman 2 does not yet have a release date.
