Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Has Finished Filming

That’s a wrap! After a long shoot that was made all the more difficult by the pandemic, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has finished filming. The sequel to 2018’s smash hit Aquaman is now in the can and heading to a long post-production process. This, according to returning director James Wan, who shared the news on Instagram. Have a look.

As we can see, Wan, Jason Momoa, and Patrick Wilson look like they’re having a great time. Momoa, who returns as the titular hero, particularly looks to be enjoying himself. We’ve also got Wilson, who is returning as Orm, aka Ocean Master. Rather fittingly, they are filming on the beach, right near Aquaman’s domain.

Wan had this to say in his caption.

“And finally, finally, finally picture wrap on the actual last day of #Aquaman2 in Malibu with these two gents @prideofgypsies @thereelpatrickwilson. Yes, we do get very wet, a lot, on this show. A THOUSAND THANK YOUs to all the incredible crew who worked so hard and tirelessly on this picture. Especially the UK portion where we shot 95% of the film. Truly some of the finest artisans and craftspeople I’ve had the good fortune to work with. And big shout-outs to the amazing Hawaiian and Los Angeles units. I have a very long way to go before it will be ready, but I can’t wait to share this little film with you all.”

Aquaman was, at one point, a big joke within the DC fanbase. No longer. Momoa debuted as Arthur Curry in Justice League (not counting his cameo in Batman v Superman). Fans quickly took to his cool version of the character. That paved the way for his first live-action solo film to become a smash hit. Aquaman earned $1.14 billion at the global box office. That makes it the biggest DC film of all time, making even more than The Dark Knight Rises. This to say, expectations are high for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Wan returned to direct, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning to pen the screenplay. Momoa also helped to cook up the story. The cast also includes Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Randall Park, Indya Moore, Jani Zhao, and Pilou Asbæk.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to hit theaters on December 16.
