Scrapped Justice League Dark Movie Details Revealed

Scrapped Justice League Dark Movie Details Revealed by Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro has revealed new details about his scrapped Justice League Dark movie. The filmmaker was, at one point, set to bring DC’s dark superhero team to the big screen. However, it wound up on the neverending pile of things that never came to be. Now, the Pacific Rim director has opened up a bit about what his version would have looked like on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

As we can see in the above video clip, del Toro spoke with host Josh Horowitz about the would-be movie while promoting his latest effort, Nightmare Alley. Even though the Justice League Dark comic only came to be in 2011, rumors cropped up as early as 2012 regarding del Toro taking on the material for a film. In the video above, he explains who would have made up the team, and what it would have been like.

“I took a little bit of the opening of the Alan Moore Constantine. And I took the dynamics between Abby [Arcane] and Swamp Thing, and I took the sort of revelatory moments when Deadman gets into a body, how he would experience the consciousness of that being. And one of my all time’s favourites is the demon Etrigan. I love that character. Zatanna is really, for me, another character that is really effortlessly powerful and interesting. Trying to mix that with Klarion the Witch Boy…I was a DC guy.”

By 2015, del Toro had exited the director’s chair after several years of development. At one point, Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) became attached. However, nothing came to be and we’ve still yet to see the team appear in live-action. Be that as it may, Constantine has enjoyed a nice life on TV. The TV show starring Matt Ryan was short-lived but popular. Ultimately, Ryan reprised the role on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

As far as movies go, Justice League Dark has received two animated films. 2017’s Justice League Dark and its sequel, 202’s Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. But a live-action version is coming. J.J. Abrams, who has a big overall deal set up at Warner Bros., is developing a show based on the franchise for HBO Max. Not only that, but he has plans for several shows involving these characters. New Constantine and Zatanna shows are in development, among others.

The Justice League Dark series does not yet have a release date.
