Ruined Friendships

If the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers emphasized that the money shot of the movie is the Hulk vs. the Hulkbuster scene, the Captain America: Civil War trailer puts a great deal of interest on something else. It isn’t all about the action in this one (though Bucky and Cap taking on Iron Man surely got us excited) – instead, it is about broken friendships. Some are mended (Steve and Bucky), some are ruined (Steve and Tony).

And these scenes (particularly the one with Tony) are played to perfection – we might say, from what we saw in the trailer. Captain America explains why he chose (or didn’t have a choice) to help Bucky – and is pretty understandable. After all, he is his last surviving childhood friend – and, in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Steve was ready to give is life in order to prove how much he cared.

But on the other hand we have the relationship between Steve and Tony – pretty much like any great friendship, it did have its hiccups (which are more than obvious in the first and second Avengers flicks). But still – it seemed pretty real to us. And when Tony says, So was I (your friend), something breaks in us.

So yeah – this particular teaser trailer emphasizes what the Civil War is all about: it isn’t about the spectacle of the battle itself, but about brothers going against brothers. Just like in any Civil War.
