Justice League DOP on Black-Suited Superman Scenes!

Over the past few weeks, arguments about how much of Zack Snyder's influence remains in Justice League have flooded the internet. Most recently, the movie’s director of photography shared some new info that's likely to add some fuel to those conversations.

After Doomsday killed Superman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, many speculated that upon his return, the superhero would sport a black suit similar to the one he wore in comic books. Also, Henry Cavill, who portrays the character in the apparently endangered DC Extended Universe, teased the costume during principle filming.

But now, the movie's been in theaters for some time, and even fans who haven’t seen it yet are aware that Superman's black suit is nowhere to be seen. But that doesn’t mean that Cavill conned the fans.

DOP Fabian Wagner confirmed that Snyder had shot some scenes that featured the superhero in the black suit. It's not clear whether the scenes were left on the cutting room floor as a result of Joss Whedon’s take-over as director or Kevin Tsujihara’s two-hour runtime mandate. As part of an email interview, the cinematographer told Inverse:

There were . It’s a cool looking costume. Sadly, we didn’t see that either in the final cut…Zack takes his time with telling the stories, and I’ve always liked that about his movies. There are a few scenes that I was very much looking forward to seeing which unfortunately got cut.

Those who haven't seen the latest DC superhero extravaganza should know that a number of scenes that showed up in the trailers were also scrapped. In one of them, Alfred Pennyworth remarks to an unnamed character, “He said you’d come. Let’s hope you’re not too late.”

Wagner didn’t divulge who Jeremy Irons’ character was speaking to, but he shared that it was “a great scene to shoot”, and one of his “favorites”.

UPDATE: TheWrap's Umberto Gonzalez recently tweeted that the Man of Steel was never intended to wear the black suit. Rather, it was meant to be an Easter Egg:
