Not only did the first trailer for Deadpool 3 drop during the Super Bowl this year, but we finally know the official title for the movie as well. Marvel Studios and Disney have confirmed that the movie is called Deadpool & Wolverine. Given that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine for the first time since 2017’s Logan, that makes sense. More than anything, it confirms that he’s a main character in the movie and not just a glorified cameo.
The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but it’s clear that there are major connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, a lot from Loki appears to be coming into play here. There are also lots of references to Fox’s X-Men universe. Beyond that, the biggest thing is that we don’t actually see Jackman’s Wolverine on screen much. We don’t see his face at all. It seems like Marvel wants to build this up a bit more before they show us the goods. The studio is maintaining secrecy here, as they haven’t even released an official synopsis yet.
This will mark the first R-rated movie in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some were concerned about the franchise when Disney purchased Fox. Disney isn’t big on R-rated movies, particularly within its major franchises. But the powers that be recognized that Deadpool wouldn’t work as well in the PG-13 realm. Given how successful the first two movies were, this appears to be a wise decision.
Shawn Levy (The Adam Project, Real Steel) directs the film. Tim Miller directed the first Deadpool, while David Leitch directed Deadpool 2. The cast is led by Ryan Reynolds, who once again returns as Wade Wilson. The ensemble also includes Emma Corrin (The Crown), Morena Baccarin (Gotham), Rob Delaney (Hobbs & Shaw), Leslie Uggams (American Fiction), Karan Soni (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner serve as producers. Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack are on board as executive producers. Reynolds re-teamed with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on the screenplay, with Zeb Wells and Levy also contributing.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to hit theaters on July 26.
