James Gunn Confirms The Peacemaker Season 2 Scripts Are Done

Peacemaker season 2 is one big step closer to becoming a reality. Writer/Director James Gunn has confirmed that he has finished writing the second season of the show. Gunn is now very busy as the co-head of DC Studios. Even so, he has managed to find time to write the new episodes of the series, which will bring back John Cena as the title character. Now, it’s just a matter of how long we’ll have to wait to actually see those episodes.

Gunn took to Threads recently to respond to a report that he had indeed finished writing the second season of Peacemaker. The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad filmmaker responded simply by saying “Accurate.” The only downside is that Gunn is currently getting ready to direct Superman: Legacy, which is set to release next summer. That means the show wouldn’t be able to get underway until after his commitments on that film are done. So it still could be a while.

The first season of Peacemaker aired on HBO Max (now just called Max) in early 2022. So it’s already been a full two years. In all likelihood, the show wouldn’t return until late 2025/early 2026 at this point. That is an awfully long break between seasons. There’s also the matter of the full DC Universe reboot that Gunn is spearheading alongside Peter Safran for Warner Bros. The reboot kicks off in earnest with Superman: Legacy next summer.

Here is the synopsis for Peacemaker.

“Peacemaker explores the continuing story of the character that series star John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer, writer and director James Gunn’s 2021 DC film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it! Delving into current world issues through the lens of Super Hero/Super-Villain/world’s biggest douchebag, the series extends the world created for The Suicide Squad while bringing to life the soul and wit of Peacemaker and the team.”

It’s unclear how Cena’s character and this corner of the DCU will fit into the reboot. Almost every major character is being recast in the new DCU. So Gunn will need to explain how these characters are managing to carry over into the new continuity.

The cast for the show also includes Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee and Robert Patrick. Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five in the first season. Gunn, Safran and Matt Miller serve as executive producers on the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.

Peacemaker season 2 does not currently have a release date.
