Marvel has released a new trailer ushering in a new era of the X-Men. The publisher is revamping the mutants within the pages of its comic books in a big way, with the legendary Jonathan Hickamn recently wrapping up his run on House of X and Powers of X, which served as a launching pad for a slew of new X-Men titles. This latest trailer previews the flagship title in the new mutant-filled line. Have a look.
As we can see from the trailer, a lot is being said here. “Fun, quick stories” are promised and Hickman will have the entire X-Men character lineup at his disposal. The art on display looks like a marriage between something modern and a classic look for these characters that 90s fans will likely be into. The main feature here is the art from Leinil Francis Yu, which may be enough to get people to jump on board with this massive relaunch for the title.
“Jonathan is one of the most skilled writers in the comic book industry for sure. He comes up with enormous ideas and he is incredibly good at executing them perfectly on the page,” editor Jordan White says in the trailer. The lineup for the first issue of the new X-Men book features Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Dr. Cecilia Reyes, Havok, Polaris, Magneto, Vulcan, Cable, Prestige and Corsair.
“[Leinil Francis Yu] is a phenomenal talent. He has an incredible eye: staging is wonderful, his character designs are cool. I love working with him. He’s fantastic,” Hickman says.
Here’s the official synopsis for X-Men #1
“DAWN OF X! The X-Men find themselves in a whole new world of possibility… and things have never been better! Jonathan Hickman (HOUSE OF X, POWERS OF X, SECRET WARS) and superstar artist Leinil Yu (NEW AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA) reveal the saga of Cyclops and his hand-picked squad of mutant powerhouses!”
This comes as the future of the X-Men, in general, is very bright. Not only is Marvel Comics going to be inundated with mutant-centric books, but Marvel once again owns the screen rights to the franchise, thanks to Disney’s massive merger with Fox. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige already has plans in the works for a reboot set within the MCU, but it’s probably going to be a while until we actually see these characters appear on screen, since we’ve still got Phase 4 of the MCU to get through. With that in mind, this comic may be a great way to help fill the void until them.
