The Suicide Squad Cast Announced and It’s Massive

James Gunn has revealed the full cast for The Suicide Squad. The filmmaker took to Twitter to finally reveal some concrete information about the much-discussed sequel/reboot of the DC Comics property. Here's the post.

"Don't get too attached. #TheSuicideSquad," Gunn said in his caption. This is rather damning, as it implies some members of this very impressive cast list won't be making it too long. Ultimately, some of these big stars could end up just having glorified cameos. In any event, the cast is impressive nonetheless.

The full cast includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Viola Davis, Michael Rooker, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, David Dastmalchian. Taika Waititi, Alice Braga Sean Gunn, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Flula Borg, Peter Capaldi, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Juan Diego Botto, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruis and Jennifer Holland. That is a ridiculous amount of star power from various walks of entertainment. It speaks volumes about the credibility Gunn has built up in the industry, given his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Of note, there are several returning cast members, such as Robbie, who will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn. We also have Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag). Notably absent is Will Smith, who played Deadshot in 2016's David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad, as well as Jared Leto, who portrayed the Joker.

Many of the roles these various cast members will be playing remain mysterious. Elba was originally brought in to replace Smith as Deadshot. Instead, he will be playing a new character entirely. We also know Dastmalchian is playing Polka Dot Man and Melchior is playing Ratcatcher. It has previously been reported that Agee is voicing King Shark, but that's yet to be confirmed officially.

As far as plot details go, they're virtually non-existent at this point. It had previously been stated that this would reboot the franchise, but clearly it's still going to be rooted in the same universe as Ayer's entry in the DCEU. It's worth noting that movie was trashed by critics upon arrival. Despite that fact, it went on to gross $746 million worldwide.

Just as a little refresher, here's a synopsis for Suicide Squad

"Figuring they’re all expendable, a U.S. intelligence officer decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker (Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own."

Production is expected to begin on the film later this month. Once Gunn finishes up his duties here, he'll be heading back over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to tackle Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Suicide Squad is currently set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
