It seems like a long time since we’ve heard anything concrete about The New Mutants, but it’s still coming and a new trailer will be here in January to prove it. This, according to the film’s director, Josh Boone, who made the reveal on Instagram. Albeit in a totally unrelated post in the comments section. Have a look.
Digging into the comments on that thread, we can see that Boone reveals a trailer is coming in January. For those who may not be aware, this X-men spin-off flick has been through the wringer. It originally shot in 2017 and it was billed as more of a horror movie. A trailer was even released in October 2017. However, then Fox ordered reshoots and delayed the release. Things got even more complicated once Disney purchased Fox.
That barely scratches the surface, but last we heard it was set for an April 3, 2020, release. If we do indeed get a new trailer in January, that still seems realistic. For a while, there were rumors it would be dumped to a streaming service. However, every indication is that Disney/Fox are going to see how this one fares at the box office.
“I’m being told, yes [about New Mutants getting a theatrical release],” longtime producer Lauren Shuler Donner said earlier this year. “As I say, I took a step back so that was under Simon [Kinberg]’s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea that it started off as more of a teen movie and the decision came to make it more of a horror film. I think it’s a good idea. I want to see it be released. I’m hopeful that it will. I’d hate to see it thrown to Hulu.”
“It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants,” cast member Charlie Heaton said while speaking with Entertainment Weekly last year. “It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horror X-Men movie, which we haven’t seen before. I feel like, for an X-Men movie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much, I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps, but it is, in terms of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.”
