The first trailer for Madame Web has arrived. This is the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off universe, which also includes movies like Venom and Morbius. In this case, we’re taking a trip to another universe where there are multiple live-action Spider-People. Yes, it looks like we’re getting Spider-Woman and others in this one as well. Check it out for yourself.
It’s a little tough to totally get a grip on the film’s plot. We see that the villain is not dissimilar to Spider-Man. It seems Cassandra Webb is tasked with saving people from his evil ways as she can see into the future. This is more than a little different than the version of Madame Web Marvel fans are probably familiar with. In the comics, as well as the Spider-Man animated series and some video games, the character was an old woman without much by way of superpowers. The filmmakers have taken some liberties with the source material.
Here is the synopsis for Madame Web.
“‘Meanwhile, in another universe…’ In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Sony still controls the Spider-Man franchise even though they have a deal with Disney for Peter Parker to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, instead, they’ve started doing these spin-off films, largely focused on villains and B-tier characters. The Venom movies have been very successful for Sony up to this point. Despite not earning much by way of critical acclaim, both Vernon and Let There Be Carnage were big hits at the box office. Venom 3 is currently in the works and is set to hit theaters next year. Morbius, on the other hand, was a critical and commercial disappointment last year.
The studio also has Kraven the Hunter in the can. The movie was originally supposed to be released this year. However, it was delayed thanks to the Hollywood strikes and is now due out in 2024 as well.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) is in the director’s chair working from a screenplay she wrote alongside Claire Parker. Kerem Sanga cooked up the story. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produces the film, with Adam Merims and Claire Parker on board as executive producers. The cast includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott.
Madame Web is set to hit theaters in 2024.
