There are some very interesting things going on in the world of Marvel Comics right now. One of those is Savage Avengers, which has put together an interesting team that, very recently, including Conan the Barbarian, Doctor Doom and the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Doctor Strange. As reported by Comicbook.com, a recent issue of the book made the most of that unique trio and turned Doctor Strange into something new entirely.
Warning: Spoilers to follow for Savage Avengers #9
The issue sees the trio facing off against the evil Kulan Gath, an evil wizard and classic villain of Conan. Following their last battle, Conan wound up in the possession of the Eye of Agamotto. This drew the attention of Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange. When a mysterious city appears in Egypt, the three of them decide to go scope things out together. This is where things get particularly interesting.
Kulan Gath is behind it and things get ugly fast. He seemingly kills Doctor Doom, but it’s quickly revealed that this was just a Doombot and the real Victor Von Doom is on the scene in a hurry to help in the fight. Stephen Strange becomes a true casualty of the battle, as he ends up poisoned. To remedy this, Doom calls in a missle that, itself, isn’t so much a weapon, but it’s contents reveal a powerful one.
A suit of armor emerges from the missile and wraps itself around Strange. Conveniently, it delivers a remedy for the poison but, more importantly, we see the Sorcerer emerge in a suit of his very own Iron Man armor. Conan and Doom look on as he becomes The Iron Mage! The final page delivers an epic shot, showcasing the armored sorcerer, with his trusty cloak of levitation attaching itself to the outside. It’s quite the sight.
“From his prison of stone, Conan witness the birth of the Iron Mage, and the Cimmerian began to reconsider his lowly opinion of the Sorcerer Supreme,” the final passage of the issue reads.
Here’s the official synopsis for Savage Avengers #9.
“Folks, we won’t mince words. Kulan Gath has got to go. If Conan The Barbarian, Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom can’t do it, then it can’t be done. Plus, what is the fate of Kulan Gath’s guest, Doctor Voodoo?”
It will undoubtedly be interesting to see where this all goes in the months to come. Will this be more of a one off thing? Or is Doctor Strange going to be using this Iron Man armor more frequently? Time will tell.
Savage Avengers #10 hits shelves on February 12. So those of you who haven’t had a chance to dig into this one have some time to get caught up before the new issue drops.
