Cable is coming back with a brand new book. Marvel has announced a new ongoing series centered on the fan-favorite mutant, which is set to hit stands in 2020. The book is being written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool) and re-teams him with artist Phil Noto. But this isn’t going to be the same old Cable we used to know. In fact, it’s going to be a much younger Cable.
The book, simply titled Cable, will center on a young Nathan Summers. Typically, the character is portrayed as a grizzled older man from the future, so this is going to flip the script on what fans are familiar with.
Here’s the synopsis for Cable #1.
“Once a grizzled old war veteran from an apocalyptic future, Cable has a new lease on life as a young mutant living on the mutant paradise Krakoa, but you can’t keep a good soldier down! Ready for adventure and looking for trouble, Nathan Summers will be headlining an all-new solo series this March that will take the son of Cyclops to places he’s never gone before!”
“I’m thrilled to be back working in the X-Universe and very happy to get the band back together with my buddy, Gerry Duggan,” Noto says. “Cable’s always been a favorite of mine and it’s fun to work in a painterly style again ala Black Widow. Very excited for people to read this book. I think we’re doing something really special. Stay tuned!”
Duggan took to Twitter to share his thoughts on reuniting with Noto for this new book.
“No single person bares more blame for me having a comics career than the great Phil Noto. I am proud to continue my tradition of Phil carrying me around. Phil & Cable are going to fuck you up,” Duggan said.
Marvel also revealed the cover art for the book’s first issue, which reveals our look at a young Nathan Summers, the daughter of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey. As we can see, Nathan isn’t alone, as Wolverine and some other key mutants are along for the ride. The art also features the tagline, “Speak softly and carry a bit $&%@ gun.”
More casual fans will likely be familiar with Cable will know him from Deadpool 2. Josh Brolin, who coincidentally also plays Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, brought the more classic, grizzled version of the mutant to life and put him up against Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson. It’s unclear if we’re ever going to see Brolin reprise his role in the MCU following the Disney/Fox merget. So this comic could be just what the doctor ordered.
Cable #1 hits shelves in March 2020.
