Colin Farrell Discusses Role as Penguin in The Batman

Colin Farrell has opened up a bit about his role in The Batman. The actor is set to appear as Penguin in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation and, recently, while promoting his new movie The Gentlemen on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Farrell talked a bit about it and had the following to say.

“I’m in the process of talking to Matt Reeves, who’s the director, who wrote the script, and wrote a really beautiful, dark, moving script, really gorgeous,” Farrell said. “It’s all very hush hush, but it’s a really beautiful script that he wrote and he has a real love for it, Matt. So, we’re in the process of finishing designing the aesthetic of the character.”

Farrell has been spotted in some photos from set, but we’ve yet to see his full Penguin getup. Based on what he’s saying here, they haven’t finalized the design. Indeed, everything about The Batman has been kept very quiet up to this point. Virtually no plot details have been revealed and it isn’t even clear what time period it takes place in. That said, some of the set photos we’ve seen suggest that it could be taking place in the 90s, but that has yet to be confirmed.

What we know for sure is that Robert Pattinson is set to be our new Batman and he will be up against a host of villains. Though, if there is a “main” villain, it hasn’t been revealed who that will be just yet. Director Matt Reeves has said the film will focus more on the character’s skills as a detective and will be more of a noir tale.

Batman is not a superhero,” Pattinson recently said as a guest on Today. “It’s weird, I always balk at it. It doesn’t count. You need to have, like, magical powers or something.” Pattinson’s recent comments, though not too revealing, do give us something of a window into his take on the character.

This film will be taking place outside of the established DCEU and will exist in a different universe. That means Reeves won’t be anchored to what has come before. Originally, Ben Affleck intended to star in and direct the movie, but then he stepped down as director and, ultimately, the role of Batman all together, paving the way for Reeves and Pattinson to usher in a new era of the Caped Crusader on screen.

The cast includes Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Peter Sarsgaard and newcomer Jayme Lawson are also on board in unspecified roles.

The Batman is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
