Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Release Date Moved Up By Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has shifted the release date for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom once again. The good news is this time it’s moving up a tiny bit, meaning moviegoers will get to see it sooner rather than later. The film was already delayed several times by the studio. Luckily, it seems like it’s more or less still on track right now, as it’s due to arrive as a bit of an early Christmas present for DC fans.

According to Deadline, the Aquaman sequel is now set to hit theaters on December 20. Previously, Warner Bros. had the film dated for December 25. That would have put it out on a Monday, lining up directly with the Christmas holiday. Instead, it’s now going to arrive on the Wednesday before Christmas, giving it a nice, long weekend to earn the big bucks. Currently, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is also slated to arrive on that same date. However, since filming only recently began on that one, it seems likely Sony could delay it.

Regardless, The Lost Kingdom figures to have the edge here. Director James Wan’s Aquaman became a gigantic surprise in 2018 when it went on to earn $1.1 billion at the global box office. Amazingly enough, that’s still good enough to make it DC’s highest-grossing movie ever. Yes, even more than The Dark Knight Rises. Wan is back in the director’s chair for the sequel, which will once again see Jason Momoa in the lead role as Arthur Curry.

Here is the synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

“When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”

Meanwhile, DC Studios is in a period of transition. James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over as heads of the studio, and they are planning a reboot of the universe. The first wave of projects was recently announced, leaving the future for actors such as Momoa uncertain. Mostly, it seems like Gunn and Safran are moving away from the so-called Snyderverse that kicked off with Man of Steel. So whether or not we’ll see Momoa as Aquaman beyond this film remains to be seen.

The cast also includes Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Dolph Lundgren (Nereus), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Temuera Morrison (Arthur Curry), Randall Park (Dr. Stephen Shin), Vincent Regan (Atlan), Jani Zaho (Stingray) and Indya Moore (Karshon).

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20.
