Batman fans recently got a bit of bad news. After a series of delays, The Batman Part II recently had to pause filming. While many questions remain, director Matt Reeves had to temporarily step away for personal reasons. This has led to much speculation over the fate of the long-awaited sequel. Many questions are still unanswered, but the sequel won’t be canceled. That much is certain.
Speaking recently with IGN, DC Studios co-head was asked whether or not there is a chance that The Batman Part II doesn’t begin filming again. Or, to put it another way, if it could be canceled. Safran flatly said, “No.” So there we have it. Since Safran runs DC Studios alongside James Gunn, he would know. The movie will happen, one way or another.
Plot details remain full under wraps but Gunn has praised the script for Reeves’ The Batman sequel. The hope is that Reeves will be able to return sooner rather than later and finish what he started. However, the idea has been floated in the rumor mill that Warner Bros. could seek a fill-in director to replace him. That, however, is pure speculation for the time being.
Speaking further, with IGN, Safran talked a bit more broadly about Batman in the DC Universe. Robert Pattinson’s Batman won’t be the main Batman of the DCU. That means another actor will need to be cast for the upcoming The Brave and the Bold as well as other projects. Safran expressed excitement about where it’s all headed.
“We know that we’ve got Batman: Part II and [the animated film] Dynamic Duo in 2028. I couldn’t be more excited about the plans that we have over the next five years and, obviously, a lot of them, we’re just not able to talk about yet, but I think you’re never going to please everybody, but I have a feeling that people are going to be excited about what we have coming up. And, again, Batman: Part II, everybody’s aware of the issues we’re having right now, but, what we’ve seen so far of the shoot, it looked absolutely fantastic and Matt Reeves is a supremely talented filmmaker.”
The Batman sequel sees returning cast members Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell playing Alfred and Penguin, respectively. The ensemble also includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.
The Batman Part II is currently set to hit theaters on February 18, 2026.
