Why Did The Batman Part II Stop Filming? Here’s What We Know

The Batman (2022) - Warner Bros.

The Batman Part II has yet yet another speedbump. After years of delays, filming on the DC sequel had been underway. Unfortunately, director Matt Reeves has had to step away, hitting the pause button for an indefinite period of time. While much remains unanswered, here’s what we know about the situation.

Deadline first reported that The Batman Part II had paused production. The reason for the pause has been attributed to Reeves stepping away for “personal reasons.” No further context was provided. However, Warner Bros. did release a statement on the matter, saying the following.

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

It’s unclear at this time if the current stoppage will result in yet another release date delay. The sequel has been pushed back multiple times at this point. It will already arrive years later than originally planned. Currently, it’s due to hit theaters in February 2028. Undoubtedly, Warner Bros. would like to avoid having to push it back yet again. Especially because WB is now under new leadership at Skydance after the recent merger with Paramount.

DC Studios co-head called the script for the sequel great. Plot details largely remain firmly under wraps, but it will be set in Gotham City during wintertime. Robert Pattinson will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another,” Pattinson said to Collider in a recent interview discussing the sequel. “It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”

The Batman was a massive hit both critically and commercially in 2022. It took in $772 million at the global box office. That was before Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the heads of DC Studios though. They have since totally rebooted the DC Universe. It’s already been confirmed that Pattinson’s Batman will not be the Batman in the main DCU. Instead, a new Caped Crusader will be cast at some point. What that means for a potential The Batman 3 also remains to be seen. But these long delays aren’t helping on that front either.

Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell are returning as Alfred and Penguin, respectively, in the sequel. New additions to the ensemble include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.

The Batman Part II is currently set to hit theaters on February 18, 2028.
