Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is Officially Underway

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 has officially kicked off production. This, according to lead animator  Nick Kondo, who made the reveal on Twitter. Have a look.

“First day on the job!” Kondo said.

Plot details are being kept firmly under wraps for the time being. The coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for many productions to operate safely. Luckily, with animation, people can work remotely and independently, which is allowing the sequel to stay on track.

The original was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. The sequel is set to be helmed by Joaquim Dos Santos, known for his work on Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Casting details are being kept under lock and key as well, but Shameik Moore is expected to return as Miles Morales, as is Jake Johnson. In the original, Johnson played an older version of Peter Parker. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are returning as producers.

Sony was quick to give Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 the green light. The first movie, released in December 2018, went on to become a massive success both critically and commercially. It grossed $375 million at the global box office and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

One of the big appeals of the first movie was Miles Morales. The alternate universe version of Spider-Man had become wildly popular in the pages of Marvel Comics. However, he had yet to make his way to the big screen. Miles was the protagonist, but Peter Parker and several other versions of the character appeared as well

“We are definitely hard at work on the sequel. You can expect another movie. Well, of course it’s going to be on the big screen and it’s going to be about Miles,” producer Amy Pascal previously said in an interview with Fandango

Here is the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to hit theaters on October 7, 2022. Sony recently pushed the film back several months, having originally slated it for April 2022.
