The New Transformers Movie Has Found Its Writer

The next Transformers movie has taken a big step forward. Paramount Pictures has tapped Jason Fuchs (It: Welcome to Derry) to pen the screenplay for the latest cinematic take on the Robots in Disguise.

According to The Wrap, Fuchs is set to write a currently untitled entry in the franchise based on the beloved Hasbro toys. Paramount announced a new Transformers movie at CinemaCon earlier this year. Plot details remain under wraps, but this is just one of several entries in the franchise at various stages of development at the studio. Fuchs, aside from Welcome to Derry, has written movies such as Wonder Woman and Argylle, among others.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy and  longtime series director Michael Bay are on board as producers. Steven Spielberg and Hasbro Entertainment are set to executive produce.

This will presumably be the first live-action movie in the franchise since 2023’s Rise of the Beasts. The movie took place in the ‘90s and was set after the events of the Bumblebee spin-off. It, unfortunately, disappointed at the box office, which likely delayed plans for a more direct sequel.

More recently, the animated Transformers One also flopped at the box office, scrapping plans for a planned trilogy. Despite the recent misfires, these movies have performed very well historically speaking. The Transformers movies have made more than $5.4 billion combined at the global box office, though they’ve been on a downward trend for some time.

Paramount additionally has plans for a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie. It was previously confirmed that crossover won’t be the next movie in the franchise, but it’s still in the works. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) was hired to pen the script for that entry, when last we heard.

“The hardest thing about a lot of franchise movies is how many characters there are, and the more characters you try to manage, the harder it is to make a bunch of really good ones,” franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said in a 2024 interview with Collider. “You kind of got to keep going, keep it smaller, keep it smaller. So we’ll be in that process for a while where we’ll start with a bunch of Joes and a bunch of Transformers and I’ll say, regular humans, and then you’re going to do this.”

While Bonaventura was talking about the crossover at the time, his point about wanting to focus on a smaller number of characters may well inform Fuchs’ take on the material. Whether it will be a full-on reboot or something else entirely remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

The new Transformers movie doesn’t currently have a release date.
