The next Transformers movie just took a major step forward. Though details remain vague, we now know who will be in the director’s chair for the eighth live-action installment in the franchise. And fans will be very familiar with the director’s work. None other than Michael Bay is set to return to the world of the Autobots and Decepticons.
According to Deadline, Bay is in early talks to return as the director of the untitled Transformers movie. Jason Fuchs (It: Welcome to Derry) is set write the script. Perhaps more importantly, Steven Spielberg is returning as an executive producer. Not only thought, but the article notes that Spielberg will “focus on all creative aspects of the next live-action Transformers film.” This suggests that Spielberg will take a more active role alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
“Spielberg and di Bonaventura will guide this new chapter to honor the spirit of the early Transformers films,” the report notes.
The new Transformers movie was confirmed by Paramount at CinemaCon early this year. At the time, almost no details were provided. It’s clear that revamping the series is a priority for the studio. Bringing back Bay says a lot about the state of things. Bay directed five total movies in the franchise, dating back to 2007’s original live-action take on the robots in disguise. The series, to date, has generated more than $5.4 billion at the box office.
Bay’s final entry, 2017’s The Last Knight, made just over $600 million worldwide. While that may seem good, both 2011’s Dark of the Moon and 2014’s Age of Extinction brought in over $1.1 billion. However, more recent entries such as Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts have failed to even clear the $500 million mark. 2024’s animated Transformers One made a mere $128 million. A planned Transformers One trilogy was canceled as a result.
There’s no word on casting or when filming could begin. But it seems that Paramount wants to try to recapture that 2000s vibe once again. Maybe Shia LaBeouf will come back as Sam? For now, much remains unclear. Bay hasn’t directed a narrative feature since 2022’s Ambulance. He is, however, on board to helm the Barbarian TV show for Netflix.
We also recently learned that the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie has been canceled at Paramount. This all comes as the company is in the midst of its acquisition of Warner Bros. The high-profile, combined mega studio will have increased pressure to deliver hits. Can Bay and Paramount recapture that magic once again with Spielberg’s help? We shall see.
The new Transformers movie doesn’t have a release date but stay tuned.
