What’s the most anticipated superhero movie of the summer? We now have a firm answer. Both Marvel and DC have blockbusters coming our way over the next several months. Not to mention the unconventional superhero movies out there. To whatever degree one considers the heroes of Mortal Kombat superheroes is something to consider, for example. With that being said, there is a clear leader in the clubhouse.
Fandango recently released the results of a survey. They asked thousands of moviegoers what their most anticipated movie of summer 2026 was. Toy Story 5 topped the list overall. Right on its heels though is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which recently dropped its first trailer. Supergirl is also on the list, albeit a little further down. As is Mortal Kombat II. Here’s how the list shakes out.
The top 10 most anticipated summer movies of 2026
- Toy Story 5
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day
- The Devil Wears Prada 2
- The Odyssey
- Scary Movie (2026)
- Moana (2026)
- Minions & Monsters
- Mortal Kombat II
- Supergirl
- Untitled Insidious sequel
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s trailer shattered the record for the most views in 24 hours. Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker following the $1.9 billion success that was No Way Home in 2021 is clearly of interest to movie lovers. More than Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. More than the latest Minions adventure. More than DC’s latest cinematic offering.
To that end, Supergirl landed at number nine on the list. Starring Milly Alcock in the lead role, Supergirl also recently dropped a new trailer. The movie picks up in the footsteps of last year’s Superman, which was directed by James Gunn. This is a key part of the new DC Universe, which is being built out at Warner Bros. as we speak. This universe is relatively new, so there’s pressure for this movie to deliver.
“As the moviegoing landscape continues to evolve, understanding generational behaviors is critical to unlocking future growth,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango. “Gen Z and Millennials are redefining what it means to go to the movies by prioritizing premium experiences, social engagement, and new forms of content. Meeting them where they are isn’t optional, it’s essential to the future of theatrical moviegoing.”
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
“Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.”
And here is the synopsis for Supergirl.
“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
Meanwhile, things look good for Mortal Kombat II. The sequel was originally supposed to hit theaters in October 2024. However, Warner Bros. delayed MKII to summer 2026. In light of the response to this survey, it now seems like that might have been a good decision. The studio has a lot of confidence in the movie, with a third installment already in the works.
Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 8.
