Mega Man Movie Confirmed, Big News Coming Soon

We are getting some big news about the Mega Man movie in the not-too-distant future. As reported by IGN, the film is still happening and filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have opened up about it. First up, they revealed that Mattson Tomlin has signed on to pen the screenplay.

“That is true,” Joost said. “We had such a great time working with Mattson on Project Power that we invited him in to help us out with Mega Man. We are super excited about it. I think we’re going to have some big news about it soon. I can’t say all that much right now, but it’s a project very near and dear to our hearts and we’re psyched.”

The duo were discussing their new Netflix movie Project Power, which recently released its first trailer. Tomlin worked with them on that project. It seems to have gone well, as they are now partnering up for the Mega Man movie

“Mega Man was the first Nintendo video game I ever played, Schulman said.”I like that he’s an underdog hero. Both of us are deeply fascinated by robotics and the future of automation, for better and for worse. I think trying to combine that into one of our favorite historical video games is the ultimate challenge.”

It was originally announced by Capcom in 2018 that they had partnered with 20th Century Fox for the big screen adaptation of the popular video game series. However, things have changed. The Disney/Fox merger went into effect last year and Disney ultimately axed much of Fox’s production slate. What remains unclear is whether or not Disney has kept this one on the books, or if the project has changed hands.

Chernin Entertainment, the studio the Planet of the Apes series, will be producing the Mega Man movie with Masi Oka (Heroes). Capcom, in its original announcement, said they aim to “appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.”

Mega Man dates back to 1987 when the first video game was released. In the years since, it has become tremendously popular, selling more than 35 million copies across its various titles. There have been 11 games in the main series, with Mega Man 11 debuting in 2018. The franchise also extends to toy, animation and comic books.
